After looking through the list of births and marriages in East and Midlothian, it became apparent that as early as the 1600's there was a sizeable contingent of Rosses in this area. Some of which could probably be due to the continually passing of Scottish Armies fighting the English or due to travelling for work or business.

There are however at least two other possible explanations

1) One of the families that invaded England with William the Conqueror was the De Ros's who eventually acquired land in Ayrshire and East Lothian, it is thought that at some stage their name was changed to Ross so that they did not seem to be foreigners.

2) In the 1500's the Earl of Ross was held prisoner in Tantallon Castle (near Dunbar) and as was custom and practice in those days would almost certainly have had several servants with him. These servants could have settled in the area..
